National weightlifting champion Bonnie Bunyao Justin fulfilled her expectations when she won the gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at the National Exhibition Center (NEC) in Birmingham today.
The success of the world champion in the men’s under 72kg lightweight category led to Bonnie’s contribution to the national team’s fourth gold medal at this Commonwealth Games.
Last year, the gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games lifting 220kg which is also a Games record, saw the 23-year-old make history as the first Malaysian athlete to win the event at the Games.
The silver medal was won by the representative of the host country England, Mark Swan, in the weight of 202 kg, while the bronze was from Nigeria, Nnamdi Innocent, in the weight of 190 kg.
Bonnie’s achievement also made up for the disappointment of her debut on the Gold Coast, Australia in 2018, when she missed a medal after finishing fourth.
Bonnie made history when she emerged as the two-time world champion, namely in 2019 in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan and 2021 (Georgia).
