On Friday, July 22nd, the world of Adam Morehouse and his extended family was turned upside down.
Morehouse and his loved ones received calls that afternoon telling them of tragic news in Maquita, Iowa. Morehouse’s sister, Sarah Schmidt, was killed in a shooting at Maquoketa Caves State Park early that morning, along with her husband, Tyler Schmidt, and their six-year-old daughter Lola.
“Right now, everyone is operating as expected, dealing with severe tragic events,” Morehouse said Monday.
Morehouse says his sister, Sarah, has been enjoying vacationing in the Maquoketa Caves with her family, doing some of their favorite activities: hiking and camping. But around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, July 22, police found Sarah, Tyler, and Lola dead in their tent, all with gunshot wounds. Police also found suspected killer 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin dead about 1,000 yards away.
Morehouse says the murder of his sister and her family took its toll on him, especially since it seemed to be an act of random violence.
“All we know is that this was completely random, and in neither of them knew anyone,” Morehouse said of the attack. We did not know the suspect, and the suspect did not know us. We don’t know of any interaction that occurred. That person simply woke up that morning and decided to choose a tent and walk to that tent, where my sister and her family were sleeping, and they didn’t have a chance to get up.”
