Castlegar bus crash leaves 18-year-old student on life support

A teenager from Quebec is in grave condition after a crash near Castlegar last week.

RCMP say a BC Transit bus carrying 16 students was heading east on Highway 3A Thursday afternoon when it was sideswiped by an oncoming Purolator courier cube van.

Mounties say an 18-year-old was sitting next to the window where the van hit. Her classmates tried to help her until help arrived. She was first taken to Trail Regional Hospital before being transferred to Kelowna General Hospital, where she is on life support and not expected to survive.

All of the students were visiting from Quebec as part of a program at Selkirk College. Counsellors from the college, as well as RCMP Victim Assistance are offering help to the other students.

The driver of the van stayed at the scene. Investigators are still trying to determine why the courier van driver crossed the centre line.

Police say video from the BC Transit bus shows three vehicles — a blue two-door coupe, a silver SUV, and an older grey Pathfinder — travelling behind the courier driver. They are hoping to hear from the drivers of those vehicles.

Anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicle before the crash happened is also asked to contact BC Highway Patrol Nelson at 250-354-5180 and cite file 2022-3153.
