GOLDEN JUBILEE FACULTY OF LAW UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA: TRANSFORMATION OF MALAYSIAN LAW

On 17.6.2022, the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya in collaboration with the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya (PARFUM) has organized the celebration of the 50th Golden Jubilee of the Faculty of Law UM.

With the theme of Sirih Pulang ke Gagang, the festival brought together alumni from all over the country, from those serving in the government to legal practitioners, all present to witness this historic event which was completed by YAB Dato Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob, Prime Minister The Malaysian Minister is also an alumnus of the UM Faculty of Law from the 9th cohort.

The ceremony was also attended by the Chief Justice, Yang Amat Arif Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat who is also an alumnus of the law faculty as well as the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Court Judges.

This celebration of 50 Years of the Golden Jubilee brings great meaning to the alumni to remember the services of the leading law school in Malaysia that has succeeded in producing quality graduates who have shaped the legal landscape in Malaysia. It is no exaggeration to say that law faculty alumni are ‘leading’ Malaysia when they now head the 3 main pillars of the country; The Executive is headed by YAB PM, Parliament is headed by Tan Sri Azhar Harun as Yang Di-Pertua Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Judiciary is headed by YAA Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat. Today, the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya has successfully produced about 6900 graduates who meet every important sector in the country.

Millions of thanks to YAB Dato Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob who has given us a boost with the announcement of a fund of RM1 million for the establishment of the Tan Sri Ahmad Ibrahim Foundation which will help PARFUM realize a legal aid clinic to help Malaysian families who cannot afford it in line with the Government’s wishes who want access to justice for all

In fact, the establishment of this Foundation is a vision of the future of PARFUM to ensure that the law can be made citizen, not only about the law that protects the rights of every human being, but also access to legal services itself. As an association full of experts in law, this Foundation is also a manifestation of the Malaysian Family in the Government’s efforts to ensure that every citizen in the country is taken care of and defended.

Apart from that, the theme of Legal Transformation championed by the YAB Prime Minister is indeed very timely. Through his speech, a total of 147 obsolete laws will be reviewed to ensure they continue to meet current needs and interests. Personally, the Prime Minister’s determination to transform the country’s legislation is good news for legal practitioners in Malaysia – looking at the many contemporary issues that are happening today – who demand a fresh and modern legal framework. This is proof that Malaysia is becoming more progressive and PARFUM will always be ready to help in the effort to make Malaysian legislation better

For me, all the incentives announced by the YAB Prime Minister is a big step in building a Malaysian direction for the next 50 to 100 years. If we re-examine the histories of civilizations, they all have a set of legal systems that serve as the basis in building a nation-state. Moreover, the philosophy of “Family” applied by the YAB Prime Minister, gives a clear message that, the ups and downs of a country depends on the family institution in a society. This proves that the “law” is as simple as an instruction/education from parents to their children.

As a Member of the PARFUM Council, I congratulate the President of PARFUM, Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil who has inspired the idea of this 50 Years of Golden Jubilee celebration to bring back alumni who have not set foot on the University of Malaya campus for a long time. This is a celebration that we are very much looking forward to and it really means a love affair.

Finally, I call on alumni to register as PARFUM members to further expand the PARFUM family and together contribute back to the premier law school as well as spread devotion to the community including PARFUM members in need.

Celebrating the Past, Inspiring the Future.
