Climate change ‘greening’ the Alps – Daily Tribune

The Alps’ famous snow-capped peaks are fading rapidly and being replaced by vegetation cover – a process called “greening” that is expected to accelerate climate change, a study said Thursday.

The research, published in Science, is based on 38 years of satellite imagery across Europe’s iconic mountain ranges.

“Honestly, we were very surprised to find such a big greening trend,” first author Sabine Rumpf, an ecologist at the University of Basel, told AFP.

Reforestation is a well-known phenomenon in the Arctic, but has not yet been well established on a large scale in mountainous areas.

However, because the poles and mountains are warming faster than the rest of the planet, the researchers suspect a comparable effect.

Reforestation occurs in three different ways: Plants begin to grow in areas that were not there before, they grow taller and denser due to favorable conditions, and eventually, certain species that grow normally at lower elevations move to higher areas. .
