A driver was lucky not to be hit by a train during a dramatic chase involving armed officers.

The suspect rammed his car through the gate and tried to escape officers by driving a track in Essex.

Police deployed sniffer dogs and helicopters when the man dumped his vehicle and fled, police said.

The incident occurred overnight near Chelmsford and involved a Fiat 500.

Police released images of the car being dumped on the side of the tracks that barely caused a serious crash.

Officers eventually arrested the suspect and arrested him for various unspecified offences.

An Essex Police spokesperson said on Twitter: ‘The Essex Police firearms unit and QX01 found this a clone of my Fiat 500 on the A12 in Margaretting.
