Apple added native support for Nintendo Switch Pro and Joy-Con controllers in iOS 16. Riley Testutone of the iOS developers behind AltStore, found new controller support in the iOS 16 developer beta which was released yesterday.
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller worked “perfectly” according to Testut, and the two Joy-Con controllers appeared as one device for apps and games to take advantage of. Nat Brown, an engineering manager at Apple, has confirmed new controller support and even reveals there’s a neat method of changing how the Joy-Cons work in iOS 16. You can dynamically switch between using the Joy-Cons as a single controller or two separate controllers by holding down the screenshot and home button for a few seconds.
Joy-Con support opens iPhone and iPad to new games that can take advantage of this controller, and it will be interesting to see what the developers do here. Apple’s work comes more than a year after the iPhone maker added support for the PS5 DualSense controller, in addition to support for the Xbox Series X controller.
iOS 16 is currently available as a developer preview, with a public beta expected next month and a full release in the fall.
