New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell assured New Yorkers that “there is no specific and credible threat” to the city’s July 4 celebrations and that the holiday show went ahead as planned despite the mass shooting in the Chicago area this morning.
“Setting up and securing these types of large-scale events is what NYPD members do every day,” Sewell said in a statement (read below), “and we continue to work closely with our cities, states, and cities. federal partners to assume the safety of everyone.”
While holiday celebrations are held in communities throughout the greater New York City area, the largest by far is the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, where thousands of fireworks shells will be launched from five barges along the East River.
Macy’s will be broadcast live on NBC tonight at 8 p.m. ET, with live music, Broadway performers and other entertainment in addition to a fireworks display. A total of 3 million viewers are expected to attend the New York City event.
