Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is heading to Costa Rica for a two-week vacation with his family.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the family returned to the same place where they stayed during the 2019 Christmas holidays and that they paid for their own accommodation.
The prime minister had to fly on a Royal Canadian Air Force plane for safety reasons—even for personal travel—and family flights on recent trips to and from Costa Rica cost the government an estimated $57,000, without thousands more being spent on the crew’s stay in San Jose.

The PMO also said it had consulted with the federal ethics commissioner’s office about the upcoming holiday.
In 2017, Trudeau was found to have violated conflict of interest rules in connection with a 2016 vacation he took to the private island of Aga Khan in the Bahamas.
The PMO said Trudeau would receive regular briefings while he was away.
