Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has plans to add more renewable energy sources. SMC has planned to construct a 2000 kW solar power plant worth Rs. 10.63 crores in the near future. The project was approved at the SMC Light and Fire Committee meeting.
In 2010, Surat was declared a Solar City under the ‘Solar City Development’ program by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. A 100 kW Solar Power Plant was established at the Science Center in 2012-13 under this program. After that, until 2021-22, 7000 kw solar power plants have been established in 60 places.
The solar power generation capacity in the city will be further increased at a cost of Rs. 11 Crores in the near future. The photovoltaic based solar power plant connected to the rooftop network will soon be set up by SMC in 28 locations in 3 zones and 18 health centers at a cost of Rs. 10.63 crores.
SMC has planned to install solar panels in the Sarthana, Katargam and Rander areas. In addition, SMC has planned to establish rooftop solar power plants in 18 Puskesmas and 9 other buildings. This rooftop solar power plant will generate a total of 2000 kW of energy. This project will be funded under ‘Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojna’ (SJMMSVY). A tender will be submitted with the condition of maintenance for 10 years. Estimated cost of Rs. 10.63 crores have been declared covering 8.75 crores capital costs and 1.17 crores repair costs over 10 years. DeshGujarat
