Former soldier Mr Harding, originally from Sunderland, has fought alongside Ukrainian troops since moving to the country in 2018. In July he appeared in a video asking Prime Minister Boris Johnson for help.

Mr Hill has been at war with the Ukrainian International Legion.

Healy was working as a volunteer aid worker in Ukraine when he was taken by Russian-backed separatists at a checkpoint in April. He was taken with Paul Urey, who died in July while being held captive by the separatists.

Russia’s state news agency Tass said the three British men refused to assist investigators and gave statements.

Two other men from Sweden and Croatia are on trial with them.

Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin were executed in June. The British were accused of being mercenaries while fighting for Ukraine.

Their relatives believed they were Ukrainian soldiers, not mercenaries.

Britain and Ukraine said the sentence violated international rules protecting prisoners of war.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in close communication with Ukraine to assist in its efforts to free all Britons.

“We reject the use of prisoners of war and civilian prisoners for political reasons”
